6th grade - Minor, Gwen

Gwen Minor

About Me:

In Latin, “remis velisque” means “with oars and sails; with all one’s might,” and that’s how I approach everything I do! I have been reading and writing ever since I can remember and my favorite stories have always been from ancient times. My teaching efforts have been featured on National Public Radio and I have presented at the National Council of Teachers of English on the power of ancient story. I give workshops at San Francisco’s annual Litquake festival, and spend my nights studying ancient history and archaeology at Stanford’s Continuing Studies program. My book, Read Aloud Plays: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid, was published in 2007 by Scholastic.

In 6th grade Language Arts we will be: learning about the history of the English language; practicing essay writing; delving into rich non-fiction reading material; and enjoying classic literature, including William Shakespeare. In 6th grade Social Studies we will be studying: the history of early humans; the development of ideas, beliefs, and systems; and the rise and fall of civilizations. I am so excited to be teaching 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies! It is the dream job I have always wanted!

Assignments are accessible through Google Classroom and grades are accessible through the PowerSchool Middle School Parent/Student Portal on the North Star website. In addition, I’ve created interesting podcasts that cover our historical topics of study, and made them available on my website: gwenminor.com. I am looking forward to working with you and your family!
